A working guide to paper weight, written for people who are choosing a stock, not studying one.
Every project starts with a decision most clients never think to ask about: what the paper itself should weigh. GSM shows up in every print quote and every mill spec sheet, and it is treated as though it explains everything. It explains one thing. Here is what it means, and what it doesn’t.

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It measures the weight of one square meter of a given paper. A higher GSM generally means a heavier, more substantial sheet — more fiber packed into the same area.
It’s a weight measurement, not a promise.
This is the part worth slowing down for. Two papers can share an identical GSM and still feel nothing alike in the hand. Fiber composition, finish, coating, and density all affect how a sheet reads — visually and physically. A fluffy, uncoated cotton stock can be noticeably thicker than a dense, coated paper of the same GSM, because the coated sheet is compressed and the cotton sheet is not.
This matters more than the number itself. A client choosing paper by GSM alone is choosing blind.

These are general guidelines. Paper construction and mill specifications vary, and the same GSM can behave differently from one paper house to the next.
300–400+ GSM. A card should have presence in the hand — enough weight that it doesn’t fold with a light grip.
220–400 GSM, often duplexed for even more substance. This is where weight reads as occasion.
150–250 GSM. Enough body to stand up to handling across an evening, without the rigidity of a card.
250–350 GSM, usually with a fold — which means scoring becomes part of the specification, not an afterthought.
100–140 GSM. Substantial enough to feel considered, light enough to move through a printer and fold into an envelope without complaint.
70–120 GSM, chosen for opacity and page-turn feel across hundreds of repetitions, not for weight alone.
Wide range, often 250 GSM and up, selected for structural need — will it wrap, will it hold a fold, will it protect what’s inside it.
Paper weight is a production decision that ripples through everything downstream.
None of this is decided by GSM alone. All of it is decided with GSM in the room.
This is where the number stops being enough. Paper has to be matched to the process, not just the product.
A substantial, pliable sheet usually produces a deeper, cleaner impression. Weight helps, but so does how the fiber moves under pressure — a stiff, brittle stock can crack rather than shape.
Soft cotton stocks tend to take an impression beautifully, often at weights that would seem unremarkable on a spec sheet.
Smoothness, coating, and heat tolerance matter more than the GSM figure. A textured, uncoated sheet can resist foil no matter how heavy it is.
Extremely thick or heavily textured stocks may exceed what standard digital equipment can feed and fuse. This is worth confirming before a stock is chosen, not after.
Two sheets mounted together create a thicker card, a custom color combination, or a contrasting edge — a way to reach a weight and a look that no single sheet offers on its own.
Heavy paper needs to be scored before it’s folded. Skip the score, and the fold cracks instead of creasing.
This is the layer most quotes skip. It’s the one we don’t.
Clients moving between paper systems will run into a few other terms.
We avoid giving exact universal conversions between these, because GSM measures weight while points and caliper measure thickness. The two don’t translate cleanly, and a confident-sounding conversion is often a wrong one.
